Historic Sites and Buildings, Local and Theme Museums
On the morning of 22nd August 1485 the open country between Shenton and Sutton Cheney echoed to the thunder of hooves, the ring of sword on sword and the shouts and screams of battle. It proved a decisive end to the War of the Roses when King Richard III was killed and the crown passed to Henry VII. The ancient core of Leicester contains a magnificent range of Roman, Saxon, Norman and medieval buildings. These include the Castle Great Hall where Simon de Montfort formed the first English Parliament in 1264. More details are available on the local authority website [Leicestershire]

Kirby Muxloe Castle
Wonder at the gunports and sophisticated plumbing of this picturesque, moated brick built castle. Begun in 1481, it was one of the most advanced - and fashionable - fortified manor houses of its day. Yet it was never finished. The owner, Lord Hastings, Lord Chamberlain of England, was executed by Richard III in 1483. Work stopped a year later - and the Castle stands much as Hastings left it. More details [Kirby Muxloe].

Kirby Muxloe Golf Club
Private 18 hole championship length parkland course with some testing holes including the 17th with a lake guarding the green, the short 18th is also a challenge. A good test of golf for all abilities. Excellent clubhouse facilities and driving range, a handicap certificate is required.
